Symi is the eighth largest island of the Dodecanese cluster. It is located about 12 miles NW of Rhodes and its total surface are is 57.865 km. It is located 255 miles from Piraeus and about 27 miles east of Nisyros.
Its natural port is Yialos (deriving from the Greek word Aigialos, for port), around which the village is built like an amphitheatre. It has 2.606 inhabitants, 2.427 of which live on the highest area of the settlement, also known as Horio, which is built on the side of Vigla mountain.
