Symi is divided into two settlements, Yialos and Horio or Ano Symi. The harbor is situated in Yialos and the village Horio is the principal settlement. Five hundred stone stairs lead you from Yialos to Horio, or Ano Symi.
At Yialos – port you will see:
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist built in 1838, the Customs Building, the Fish Market, the stone bridge, the statue of the little fisherman, the Clock, which was constructed in 1881 and the old shipyard in Harani area.
In Ano Symi you will find the Archaeological and Folklore museum, which -apart from the remarkable folklore collection- hosts heads of statues, monuments of early Christian and post-Byzantine period and Byzantine icons.
In Yialos and Kali Strata you will see many beautifully restored or ruined mansions and shops, while locals are willing to show you everything: the Spetsaria, the old pharmacy, the Chatziagapitou-Hatziioannou house with its impressive hall, the Pharmakidis house that houses the Archaeological Folklore museum.
Another interesting site is the Venetian Castle of the Knights. Located at the highest point of the village, it encloses the church of Virgin Mary in its walls.
Taverns and restaurants await you to taste the famous Symi mini shrimps and all the traditional delicacies.
It is definitely worth it to pay a visit and pray to Archangel Michael Panormitis which dominates the other end of the island. He is the miraculous Saint of the Dodecanese, visited by people from all over the world, regardless of religion.
